FSA issues slush age

Glycerol can cause glycerol intoxication, dangerously low blood sugar and loss of consciousness when overconsumed

Stores have been told not to sell slush drinks to children under four after several were hospitalised.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) issued advice this month, warning that slush drinks with glycerol in should be age-restricted.

Glycerol can cause glycerol intoxication, dangerously low blood sugar and loss of consciousness when overconsumed. Two children have been hospitalised since 2021 due to slush drinks.

There is no legal limit of glycerol. The new FSA guidelines also state free refills should not be given to under-10s.

The FSA advised that signs stating ‘product contains glycerol – not recommended for children four years of age and under’, should be displayed on machines.
